JULIE LYN BARBER'S VOICE STUDIO
Teaching Philosophy
I believe everyone has a voice worthy of being heard. Voice lessons can provide many benefits to students, whether they are interested in pursuing a career as a singer, or just want to improve their voice for their own enjoyment. Through study of vocal technique, breath management and general music, students can gain control and confidence in their voices while improving tonal quality. I am interested in learning what the student hopes to gain from lessons so that together we can devise a plan then work together toward achieving those goals.
LOCATION: Selma, Indiana
FEE: $30.00 per hour lesson
STUDIO POLICIES
Students are expected to commit to a weekly or biweekly lesson.
Payment is expected at the time of the lesson or may be prepaid monthly.
Cancellation and/or rescheduling of a lesson can only be done with at least 24 HOURS advanced notice.
Please note: Payment is expected for missed lessons or lessons cancelled without at least 24 hours notice. Please understand that this is standard policy among teachers of private lessons (some require 48 hrs).
I understand that conflicts in schedules do occasionally arise. If so, please contact me as soon as possible to cancel or reschedule, (at least 24 hours before the scheduled lesson) to avoid paying for no lesson, otherwise, expect to be charged (or forfeit that lesson if prepaid).
Students will need to provide their own music, exercise book and pencil.
Students may bring a recording device to record lessons if they so desire.
LESSON PLAN
The following is a sample guideline for a lesson. This is a very general; some days we will follow this plan exactly, and some days we will not follow it at all. One lesson we may do all exercise singing, sometimes more repertoire, sometimes all breathwork or music theory. The beauty of private lessons is that each lesson is tailored to each individual student on any given day.
CHECK-IN: Time to find out if the student has any vocally related questions or problems they want to discuss. Fill me in on your vocal activities for the week or weeks past, including speaking engagements, screaming at games or concerts, etc.
WARM-UP: Gentle exercises selected from a group you will learn from me, in a standard order. Body, Breath, Phonation, Resonation, Quality, Range, Agility, Diction. This allows me to compare the voice from one lesson to the next. And is a great practice exercise, especially if you only have a little time, or have been using your voice strenuously, as a cool down.
EXERCISES: These are specific exercises that will address any technical issues that may arise from the warm-up, or from questions, goals or concerns of the student.
TOPIC: Each week we will deal with a topic in music or vocal study, sometimes for more than one lesson, sometimes the topic is included within the exercises, or can be
suggested by the student
REPERTOIRE: The student will sing the song or songs he/she has been working on, incorporating the previous exercises and topic of the day.
ASSIGNMENT: Each week I will assign practice material, often working on the same material for more than one week.
